Fortnite: Save the World PvE will be free this year! Even so, it's worth buying right now if you can afford it! You can obtain ANY hero you want as long as you have enough materials, resources that you can obtain for free through game play.
In other words, I finally got Master Grenadier Ramirez! Of course this occurred after being burned out on Fortnite.
At any rate, you can recruit her, or any hero as long as you have enough training manuals (you obtain these from recycling unwanted Heroes), and Flux, which you can buy from the store with gold, obtained by doing missions.
I believe they made this decision since Battle Royale PvP is making so much money, that they don't need to rely on people spending cash for loot boxes (called Llamas) to improve chances of obtaining Mythic (rarest) heroes.
Upon returning back to the game, I was amazed how much smoother and snappier things are such as building, and that sometimes Mythic heroes are on sale at the store for 4,000 gold, such as recently Mythic Ninja Ken.
Additionally, I've mentioned the other improvements they made here in this post, that made the game so much better, which led to buy signal. But with the ability to obtain any hero you want without spending a cent, the more responsive inputs with building, shooting and such, the game is now a definite buy.
The only complaint I have is when you defeat enemy Husks, they blow up in smoke, which obscures the other Husks, so you temporarily can't see what's in front of you. I hope they change that. (EDIT: these were special challenge signifiers, otherwise there's no cloud smoke).
The caveat is that if you're strapped for cash, do wait as Epic Games noted that Save the World will be free sometime in 2018, presumably when they complete the story lines in Canny and Twine (the last two maps of the game).
Fortnite: Save the World is one of my favorite games, though I burned out on it which is my fault since I played it excessively for months on end. The game play is fantastic and innovative due to the use of building elements.
Because of the building used to prevent Husks from destroying your objectives, this strategy is very deep as you need to learn how to build around the objective. Ideally, you need to put up trap halls, making sure the monsters actually go through your traps as opposed to going around. Even after thousand hours plus, I still can't construct effective trap halls very well, so you'll get your money's worth and then some!
